Barbri vs. Themis vs. UWorld: Which Bar Prep Course Should You Use?

Every bar candidate asks this question. The answer depends on how you learn, how much you want to spend, and what you actually need from a prep course.

Barbri

What it is

The largest and oldest commercial bar prep course. Barbri offers a structured, day-by-day study plan with video lectures, outlines, practice questions, and essay workshops. It covers all MBE, MEE, and MPT content.

What it does well

• Structure. Barbri tells you exactly what to do every day. If you want a plan and will follow it, this is the most prescriptive option.
• Brand trust. Barbri has been around for decades. Most law schools have a Barbri rep. Most of your classmates will use it. There is comfort in the herd.
• Comprehensive materials. The outlines are thorough. The lecture library is extensive. The essay grading service exists (though turnaround varies).

What it does poorly

• Rigidity. The day-by-day plan does not adapt to your performance. If you are already strong in Contracts and weak in Evidence, Barbri gives you the same amount of Contracts as everyone else.
• Volume over efficiency. Barbri assigns a staggering amount of work. Many candidates fall behind the schedule, which creates anxiety and guilt that is counterproductive.
• Price. Barbri is the most expensive mainstream option, typically around $2,500-$4,000 depending on the package.

Best for

Candidates who want maximum structure and are willing to follow a rigid schedule. If you need someone to tell you what to do every day and will actually do it, Barbri works.

Themis

What it is

A more modern, video-heavy bar prep course that is typically less expensive than Barbri. Themis offers lectures, outlines, practice questions, and a completion-percentage tracker.

What it does well

• Price. Themis is usually $1,000-$2,000 less than Barbri for comparable content.
• Video quality. The lectures are generally well-produced and concise. Themis lecturers tend to be more engaging than Barbri's on average.
• Flexibility. The study plan is less rigid than Barbri's, giving you more room to adjust.

What it does poorly

• Question quality. Themis practice questions are sometimes noticeably easier or more straightforward than real MBE questions. This can inflate your practice scores and give a false sense of readiness.
• Essay feedback. Like Barbri, essay grading exists but varies in quality and turnaround.
• Less structure. If you need a rigid daily plan, Themis is less prescriptive than Barbri, which is a feature or a bug depending on your personality.

Best for

Candidates who want a traditional course at a lower price point and prefer learning from video lectures. Especially good for candidates who are disciplined enough to manage their own schedule.

UWorld

What it is

UWorld is not a traditional bar prep course. It is a question bank with detailed explanations. No lectures, no outlines, no study plan. Just questions and answers.

What it does well

• Question quality. UWorld's MBE practice questions are widely considered the best in the market. The difficulty is realistic, the distractors are well-crafted, and the explanations are thorough.
• Explanations. This is UWorld's strongest feature. Every explanation breaks down why each answer choice is right or wrong, with rule statements and analysis. You can learn the law from the explanations alone.
• Performance tracking. UWorld provides detailed analytics on your performance by subject and topic, which helps you identify weak areas.

What it does poorly

• No structure. UWorld does not tell you what to do. There is no study plan, no lecture series, no essay practice. You need to bring your own structure or pair it with another resource.
• MBE only. UWorld does not cover MEE essays or MPT tasks. If you are taking the UBE, you need a separate resource for the written components.
• Not a complete course. If you are starting from zero, UWorld alone is probably not enough. You need substantive law from somewhere before the questions become useful.

Best for

Candidates who already have a foundation in the substantive law (from law school or a prior bar attempt) and want the highest-quality MBE practice available. Pairs well with free outlines or a cheaper course for essay prep.

What About Kaplan, AdaptiBar, and Others?

Kaplan occupies similar territory to Themis: a full course at a mid-range price. It is a reasonable option but less widely used, which means fewer peer reviews and study group compatibility.

AdaptiBar is similar to UWorld in concept (a question bank, not a full course) but uses licensed NCBE questions rather than original ones. The questions are real, which is a significant advantage. The explanations are less detailed than UWorld's.

The Honest Answer

No course is magic. The candidates who pass are the ones who put in consistent, focused work over 8-10 weeks. The course is a delivery mechanism for that work.

If you have the budget, Barbri or Themis plus UWorld is a strong combination: the course gives you structure and essay prep, UWorld gives you the best MBE practice available.

If you are on a budget, Themis alone or UWorld plus free outlines and self-directed essay practice can absolutely get you there. The pass rate difference between Barbri and Themis users is not large enough to justify the price difference for most candidates.

Pick the one you will actually use consistently. That matters more than which logo is on the cover.
