42 U.S.C. § 3601 et seq.
The rule
The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, financing, or advertising of housing on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, familial status, or disability. Landlords must permit reasonable accommodations and reasonable modifications for disabled tenants; narrow exemptions exist for owner-occupied buildings of four or fewer units and single-family sales by owners without a broker.
In plain English
