Reputation concerning character (803(21))

FRE 803(21)

The rule

A reputation among a person's associates or in the community concerning the person's character is admissible as a hearsay exception. This is the vehicle by which reputation testimony admitted under FRE 404, 405, 607, and 608 clears the hearsay bar.

In plain English

Character-reputation evidence is technically hearsay (community assertions offered for truth of what the community believes), so a specific exception is needed. This exception makes it work whenever the substantive character rules permit reputation proof.
