Rule 6 — time computation
FRCP 6
The rule
When computing any time period stated in days, exclude the day of the triggering event, count every day (including intermediate weekends and holidays), and include the last day; if the last day is a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the period continues to the next business day. A court may extend deadlines for good cause; extensions after expiration require a showing of excusable neglect.
In plain English
Rule 6 is the arithmetic of federal deadlines. The Saturday/Sunday/holiday rollover only helps on the LAST day, not on intermediate weekends.
Memory hook
Skip day 0, count all, roll the last.
