Uttering a forged instrument

The rule

Uttering is offering as genuine a writing known to be forged, with intent to defraud. The instrument need not be accepted; presentation is sufficient. Forgery and uttering are separate offenses and may be charged together.

In plain English

Forgery is making the fake; uttering is passing it. Handing a forged check to a teller — even if she rejects it — completes uttering.
